A Hidden Treasure in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea

Looking for a unique getaway off the beaten path? Let us introduce you to Hiroshima Island, the largest and most fascinating of the Shiwaku Islands, a beautiful chain of 28 small islands tucked away in the calm waters of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea.

Only five of these islands are still inhabited today—Honjima, Ushijima, Hiroshima, Teshima, and Oteshima—all part of the picturesque Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku Island. And right at the center of it all is Hiroshima Island, a place where history, nature, and island charm come together in unforgettable ways.

This blog is your guide to exploring Hiroshima Island—whether you're planning a visit or just dreaming of your next adventure. Wander through quiet fishing villages, discover hidden shrines, and soak up breathtaking sea views.

History buffs will be intrigued to learn that Aoki rocks from this very island were used by the Tokugawa shogunate to help rebuild the majestic Osaka Castle.

From coastal walks and scenic ferry rides to stories of samurai and stone masons, Hiroshima Island is full of surprises waiting to be uncovered.

Stay tuned as we share insider tips, travel stories, and local secrets to help you make the most of your journey to this island paradise.

Jinkoji Temple

Located in Tateishi you can find the Jinkoji Temple. Jinkoji Temple is a short walk away from the Onoetei Guest House, where you have the opportunity to stay at a Japanese Heritage listed building and experience how island life felt over 50 years ago. In recent years the temple has been damaged by the ravages of time as well as the many wild boars that inhabit the island. Hence the temporary fencing that you will see here. If you plan to visit Sanuki Hiroshima Island, we recommend you come and see both Jinkoji Temple and the Onoetei Guest House if you are in the area . Here is a google maps link to  Jinkoji Temple .
